Retro Furniture Still Modern After All These Years

Mid-Century modern homes built between 1940-1970 and the now retro modern furniture that filled them, are more ultra hip and cool than ever.  Enthusiast of “Space Age” style homes, restore theses gems with modish details that are the very essence of the original futuristic style.

It is not just the sleek, clean designs of the homes that makes them still modern after all these years.  The concepts behind the design resonate with our own modern world.  Mid-Century modern homes draw inspiration from the organic world.

The simple lines, flat or butterfly roofs, open floor plans and floor to ceiling windows merge the interior with nature and a fresher, better world. The homes were built to last with natural materials such as wood, stone, brick, tile, plaster and cork – materials that are being used in green home renovations today.

Modern homes also used materials from the new post-World War II technology such as Formica, drywall, cement slab foundations, aluminum and stainless steel. Modern furniture was designed to mix in with the structure of the mid-century modern home to create a harmonious and whole living space. The entire space was stylish, functional, and comfortable.  The blend of both technology and art were used to produce this furniture.

Sadly most homes from the Atomic Age have been remodeled beyond recognition and the ones that are still in the original condition can be costly to purchase.  However, if you love retro modern design and are lucky enough to own one, you will find inspiration to restore a mid-c home with retro furniture here at MidCModern.com.

Some people enjoy rummaging around flea markets and thrift stores for vintage furniture finds.  Others prefer to shop for 1950′s and 1960’s inspired reproductions.  Herman Miller was a prolific manufacturer of iconic mid-century modern furniture and still sells licensed originals.

Then there are those people who search for the iconic pieces such as the Barcelona chair, Eileen Gray side table, Wassily chair, and Noguchi coffee table. Styling a retro mod pad is part of the fun of owning one. Be sure to check out the cool 1950′s and 1960′s restored homes in must have book Atomic Ranch for some fantastic decorating ideas.
